5 Tracks for This Week’s Grind: Post Malone, fzpz, The Game & Dej Loaf

Tracks we can’t stop listening to no matter how hard we try. This week’s picks include music from Post Malone, fzpz, The Game and Dej Loaf and more.

1. “TEAR$”, Post Malone feat. 1st

This hypnotic track opens with the line “I wipe my tears with the money, yeah”, and you already know it’s an anthem for those at the top of their game, as if to say, “It’s lonely at the top, but hey, look at all this cash you’ve got.” But just who is Post Malone? Appearance-wise, he’s a slimline A$AP Yams – God rest his soul – reincarnate; musically, he’s got Drake’s sensibilities. Two months ago, Post released “White Iverson”, a track that put him on the radar. “TEAR$” was released about a month ago and though there’s a more recent drop, “Too Young”, the criteria here is a selection of tracks that are getting us through the grind and “TEAR$” is doing a fine damn job.

2. “elephants, swans and crickets”, fzpz

fzpz is one of Singapore’s most promising beatmakers today. Heavy on the bass and dripping with synth elements, fzpz’s music puts you in that happy limbo where it’s impossible to decide whether you want to just chill out or dance crazy, and “elephants, swans and crickets” is a fine example of that. 3. “The Game”, Ryda feat. Dej Loaf

Everyone knows The Game, but few may know Dej Loaf, who broke into the scene with her song, “Try Me”. Good as “Try Me” was on its own, it was when Drake referenced a line from the song, “Love wearing black you should see my closet”, that it blew up. Part of Dej’s appeal is a confident, understated sexuality she portrays – as opposed to other female rappers in the likes of Nicki Minaj and for argument’s sake, Iggy Azalea. In fact, so understated is her sex appeal that her sexuality has come into question several times, to which, her response is that she is not a lesbian. “Sexy is what you make it,” she says in the interview, and we couldn’t agree more.

4. “Love Again”, Ta-ku feat. JMSN & Sango

More than a million plays later, here we are adding to the play count by listening to this song over and over again. Featuring soothing vocals against a rich backdrop of church choral-esque voices over an electronic beat, “Love Again” is rather the grand modern day ballad. Ta-ku, the self-professed “Genre Killer” is really killing it; look out for his album Songs to Make Up To when it drops June 12th (preorder here).

5. “Baby’s In Love”, Jamie Foxx feat. Kid Ink

Jamie Foxx’s version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the MayPac fight was polarizing to say the least, but he redeems himself with “Baby’s In Love”. It’s not revolutionary stuff, but it’s got the all-round good vibes.
