5 Tracks for This Week’s Grind: Frank Ocean, Tish Hyman, FAUXE and More

So many sick drops the past couple of months, so we’ve done the job for you by compiling the best ones here. You’re welcome.

1) Frank Ocean, “Self Control”

Anyone – and by that we mean everyone – who has been anticipating the release of Frank Ocean’s latest album Blond could finally heave a sigh of relief after the drop yesterday. While there have already been some mixed reviews of the album, “Self Control” is truly a standout track. It starts off naughty, with Ocean singing about wanting to be the “boyfriend in your wet dreams”, but it soon segues into something more of a post break-up ballad, with lyrics like “keep a place for me, for me/I’ll sleep between you, it’s nothing.” Not surprisingly, this heartbreak song has left fans speculating who exactly it’s dedicated to. Meanwhile, many others are also trying to confirm whether or not infamous Swedish rapper Yung Lean is featured on the track, especially since he has been credited on the album. Their guess is as good as ours. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

2) Tish Hyman, “Dreams ft. TY Dolla $ign & Fabolous”

Singer/rapper Tish Hyman is really one for the underdogs. An African-American female who identifies as lesbian, hailing from Bronx, her song-writing portfolio is as star-studded as it gets with names like Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Kelly Rowland on the list. Her track “Dreams” off her album, Dedicated To, sees her backed up by two rappers (Ty Dollar $ign and Fabolous) vibing in Paramount Studios as the track goes on. “Don’t let where you are from determine where you are going,” Hyman has said about the making of her album. “I’m from the Bronx, from the hood. I’ve been down and out. But I’ve always followed my dreams. Always. That’s why I’m here doing what I’m doing now, and that’s really what this entire album is about.”

3) FAUXE, “You ft. Anise”

Thanks to the never-ending work he has put into Singapore’s electronic music scene over the past four years, FAUXE, the mysterious masked beatmaker has become a household name. And after several EP releases and collaborations, FAUXE finally released a 17-track album titled “Half of my Love” yesterday, much to delight of his fans. Heartbreak seems to be the theme of the album; in a description on FAUXE’s Bandcamp page, he wrote: “This body of work talks about my break up, my falls, my downs and everything in between.” Well and good, since FAUXE’s sound is preferential to the more downtempo side of the electronic spectrum and “You”, the first track off the album, what with its poignant strings, sets the melancholic tone of the rest of the album.

4) Wallace, “Negroni Eyes”

Future soul songstress Wallace has been compared to the likes of Erykah Badu, which is no mean feat, but boy does she deliver. Her single, “Negroni Eyes” is as soulful as it gets, with jazz instrumentals making up the soundscape. On the track, Wallace said, “The lyric imagery in “Negroni Eyes” was inspired by a Frida Kahlo quote I saw scrawled in chalk on the wall of a Mexican restaurant in Wellington, NZ”. She continues, “My mind conjured up an image of a person knee-deep, wading through alcohol inside their own brain, searching for the cause of the flood all the while knowing that they, themselves are to blame. I guess in a way it’s an ode to vices and their ability to mask problems.” We’re all too happy to indulge in the vice that is Wallace’s voice – smooth like a well-aged whisky.

5) EDEN, “Drugs”

Hailing from Dublin, EDEN is a 20-year-old producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist rolled into one. With this amount of talent, it’s no wonder he caught the attention of New Zealand’s original wunderkind, Lorde, which led to an instant co-sign from her. His recent drop, “drugs” off his new EP titled I think you think too much of me is a build up of synths that eventually explodes across the soundscape – an audio mimicry of what it would feel like to be on drugs. Check out the video above.
