5 Tracks for This Week’s Grind: Tall Black Guy, Live Evil, Skinniez and More

If you’ve having a slow start to the week, don’t worry, we’ve got just the right mix, from producer Tall Black Guy to the famous Brandy, to hype you up.

1) Tall Black Guy, “From Home, To Work, and Back”

The title might sound eerily similar to our clockwork lives but fret not – the track itself offers a clean, Dilla-esque beat that will set things right. The whole album, produced by Tall Black Guy, is largely inspired by the city of Detroit, and this song in particular brings a smooth mix of drums, claps, vocal samples and a harp guitar to the fray.

2) Live Evil, “Cant Feel My Face (Remix)”

Not to be confused with The Weeknd’s song that shares the same title, this instrumental hit comes from Live Evil, a pair of DJs hailing from Vancouver, Canada. Their sonic production style stems from their backgrounds as club DJs, and their live sets, which are heavy on synths and drums, are critically acclaimed. We’re glad to have discovered them, because this remix goes so hard we can see it being the beat for a hype cypher.

3) Skinniez, “Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck”

Before you side-eye Skinniez for the highly expressive title of this track, just know that his cat, Skeldwin, just died and this was the result of his heartfelt expression. The Cape Town-based producer makes use of boom-bap elements, vocal samples from the 2009 film In The Loop and a cat’s meowing. RIP, Skeldwin.

4) Brandy, “Beggin and Pleadin”

This classic R&B songstress who has influenced many a music generation, released her new single just a few months ago and is now back with a music video. Brandy struts her stuff in a shimmery red dress, crooning about a relationship gone wrong. Trust us when we say she’s anything but regretful, because she’s not having any of that shit no more. She states in this interview, “It’s like bitch, what? It makes me feel bossy. Even if it’s for two minutes and 45 seconds, I feel empowered by the story, the vocal, the production, it sounds fearless to me.” You go girl!

5) Audiodoctor, “Raw Imagination”

This track is a creative rework of “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory that includes a sample of Lou Rawls’ cover as well. Four years from its release date and we’re still digging this track mainly for the drums and sax!
