Chinatown Vinyl Squad – 29 March – 29 April 2014

The Chinatown Vinyl Squad features the work of both local and international artists who have put a modern-day spin on Chinese vinyl record covers of yesteryear.

Vinyls were all the rage in the 70s and 80s, but looking back, the record covers seem more tacky than trendy. The Chinatown Vinyl Squad exhibition looks set to change that perception with its showcase of vintage Chinese vinyl record covers re-worked into modern-day pieces of art.

Local and international artists – 25 in all – were each given a 12″ vinyl record cover and were invited to use it as a canvas and inspiration for their artwork. Techniques such as drawing, painting and silk-screening were used in the process and the results are stunning to say the least.

Expect the unexpected from the likes of Singapore’s Eric Foenander and SBTG, Indonesia’s Ryan Ady Putra and the UK’s Russell Taysom, among many others. Each framed record cover will be on sale, with prices ranging from S$200-S$1,000. Exhibition details are as follows:

Opening hours: Mondays to Saturdays, 12pm – 1am
Venue: 醉红楼 Zui Hong Lou Bar, 8 Ann Siang Hill
*Exhibition starts at 7pm on March 29th, with music from Pushin’ On and live screenprinting. Street will be closed for a block party.
