Meet the Chinese Billionaire Knitwear Supplier to Sportswear Giants

Knitwear king, Ma Jianrong, has you to thank; your penchant for shoes like the Nike Flyknit and adidas Primeknit has helped his company amass a fortune worth billions.

Ma Jianrong, estimated to be worth US$4.3 billion, has made his fortune supplying knitwear fabric to brands such as Nike, adidas, PUMA and even Uniqlo.

Ma is the chairman of Shenzhou International, one of China’s largest exporters of fabric and garments. Interestingly, he worked his way up the ranks from the knitting and weaving department of the company.

Shenzhou is the biggest supplier of knit uppers to Nike. 12% of its business comes from Nike; another 12% from adidas; 14% from Uniqlo and 30% from PUMA.

According to Forbes, Shenzhou’s sales in the first six months of 2016 exceeded US$1 billion.
