The Beat for Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” Nearly Went To Gucci Mane

Can you imagine hearing Gucci Mane rapping “Humble” instead of Kendrick Lamar?

Kendrick Lamar's "Humble" Nearly Went To Gucci Mane

The beat for “Humble”, the track that was a prelude to Kendrick Lamar’s latest album, DAMN, was originally meant for another rapper.

In an interview with NPR, producer Mike WiLL Made-It said that the beat of the track was actually made with rapper Gucci Mane in mind. At that point, the rapper was serving time in jail. He said, “I was just thinking, damn, Gucci’s about to come home; it’s got to be something urgent that’s just going to take over the radio”.

And right he was, even though it wasn’t the Atlanta rapper spitting bars over the beat. Another surprising twist that was revealed in the interview was that when Mike WiLL showed Kendrick the beat, the “Humble” rapper almost passed it back to him for his own usage. Kendrick eventually got back to him, telling him that “his team was saying he should keep it”.

And that was how “HUMBLE” was born. Boy aren’t we glad that Kendrick’s camp decided to keep the beat. Seems like Mike Will was pretty chuffed too, as he went on to say that the project “is solid as f***”.
