Netflix Could Offer Offline Playback Next

No wifi? No worries. Offline playback on Netflix could soon become a reality.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos has hinted at an offline playback mode for the streaming platform.

That means downloading your favorite movies and TV shows beforehand, and watching them from anywhere without having to tap into your mobile data or a wifi hotspot.

This idea certainly isn’t new, as other platforms like Spotify and Amazon Prime are already offering it. But for Netflix, offline playback is seen as a means to help customers who reside in countries where broadband and wifi connectivity is unstable.

“In those countries they have adapted their behaviors to be much more of a downloading culture,” Sarandos said to CNBC. “I think as we get into more and more (of the) undeveloped world and developing countries that we want to find alternatives for people to use Netflix easily.”
