More than 250 guests attended the opening of the apartment installation, Show Flat 04, which is an artistic reflection of artist Stanley Wong’s life in Hong Kong. The artist took inspiration from the humble red-white-blue striped tarpaulin commonly used as material for bags and construction canopies and based his work on this theme.

Everything from walls and floors down to the furniture is decked out in red, white and blue, but the clever use of different widths and stripe directions adds a multi-dimensional touch and brings the show flat to life.

The installation brings about feelings of nostalgia, and a reminder of the past when the striped tarpaulin bags were used by manual laborers, street sleepers and families in transit. Such times might have vanished, but it is hoped that in viewing Wong’s work, the communal spirit and resilience of people from the previous era will remain.

Visit Show Flat 04 now till November 10th at Third Floor – Hermès, 541 Orchard Road, Liat Towers. Opening hours are 10.30am to 7.30pm daily. Admission is free.
