Man Up

Straat Picks: Movies for June 2015

Scheduled release: June 4th
Director: Ben Palmer
Cast: Simon Pegg, Olivia Williams, Lake Bell

Simon Pegg and Lake Bell seem like an unlikely pairing, but that’s probably what the casting agents were gunning for after examining the script for Man Up. After all, the movie’s premise revolves around a jaded singleton, Nancy (Lake Bell), who’s mistaken by Jack (Simon Pegg) as his blind date and gamely goes for it. As Nancy finds her true self through this romance, audiences will be wondering: Will love still blossom when the jig is up?

In an interview with USA Today, Pegg spoke out about the gender stereotypes in movies. According to him, “romantic comedies are about the dynamic between men and women — or men and men or women and women, depending on what the movie’s about. To say ‘oh I don’t want to go and see that because it’s a girls’ film’ is shutting yourself off from some big laughs.” Wise words from the comedian himself.

Jurassic World

Straat Picks: Movies for June 2015

Scheduled release: June 11th
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio

The Jurassic Park franchise enjoyed enormous success in the nineties, with director Steven Spielberg lauded for bringing the extinct dinosaurs to life in stunning realism. More than a decade after the prehistoric creatures were last seen on screen, Jurassic World revives the genre with a different director but a promising cast.

Following the events of Jurassic Park, the dinosaur island has become a theme park. With falling profits, the management decides to create a new attraction with a hybrid dinosaur to entice visitors. This all goes horribly wrong, of course, and it’s up to Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and his own bunch of tamed dinosaurs to save the day.

Minions

Straat Picks: Movies for June 2015

Scheduled release: June 18th
Director: Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm

When Despicable Me and its sequel popped up in cinemas worldwide, it wasn’t so much the main characters, but rather, the army of little yellow minions that stole the show. The perpetually-high pill-shaped creatures now get their own movie that puts them firmly in the spotlight and will give moviegoers of any age plenty of laughs.

Despite their alliance with villains since the beginning of time, minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob will attempt to protect their kind from total annihilation at the hands of Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world’s first female super-villain. Expect loads of crazy antics from the trio as the unlikely heroes go on a road trip to save the day.

Terminator: Genisys

Straat Picks: Movies for June 2015

Scheduled release: June 25th
Director: Alan Taylor
Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Lee Byung-Hun

Arnie might be turning 68 later this year, but that hasn’t stopped him from stepping into action roles following a return to the silver screen. Thanks to modern day CGI, the former governor of California continues to be in the hotseat for Terminator: Genisys, the latest in the iconic franchise that shot him to stardom back in the day.

While the plot still boils down to preventing Judgement Day, this movie is set in a new, fractured timeline when Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke). Expect familiar enemies, like Lee Byung-Hun’s shape-shifting T-1000 terminator, along with a cybernatic version of John Connor (Jason Clarke) that is more than willing to terminate his mother, Sarah.
