Google Lens Turns Your Smartphone Camera into a Search Engine

Augmented reality is not just for photo filters. With Google Lens, it turns your smartphone camera into a mini search engine.

Unveiled at Google’s I/O developer conference, Google Lens will “understand what you’re looking at and help you take action”.

According to TechCrunch, this new technology leverages on Google’s computer vision and AI system to help make sense of your photos.

As demonstrated by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in the video above, Google Lens is able to identify flower species, decipher and connect to WiFi networks, and even pull up a restaurant’s information—simply by taking a photo.

In addition, the company also has plans to integrate Lens into Google Assistant. Shown in a separate demo, users will be able to use Lens and have Assistant process the information. For example, you could take a picture of a concert date and have Assistant add it to your calendar.

In fact, you could even take a photo of a foreign sign and have Assistant translate it for you. The possibilities are truly endless!
