Hot Shots: 10 moments from Sneakerlah 2019, Malaysia’s biggest sneaker event

Sneakerheads from around the region showed up for Sneakerlah 2019, which took place in Malaysia from October 5 to 6.

The unforgettable event featured a special edition sneaker collaboration, eye-catching installations and of course, the customary lucky draw of some of the world’s rarest kicks. If you weren’t there, don’t fret. Here are the highlights from Sneakerlah 2019.

1) “Nasics Lemak”, the nation’s pride translated on feet

One of the standouts of Sneakerlah 2019 was this exclusive collaboration between Asics and retailer Hundred%. The Gel-Kayano 5 OG featured elements inspired by Malaysia’s national food, nasi lemak. The event even replicated the classic nasi lemak stall experience for attendees looking to buy the shoe. We can’t say much about how it tastes, but we’d take this on a plate any day.

2) Who would do this to a shoe?

South Korean artist @rudyindahouse_ is known for his unique artwork, which entails deconstructing sneakers and showcasing all of its layers. Some of the pieces on display at Sneakerlah 2019 included Sean Wotherspoon’s Air Max 97/1, Nike x Off-White Air Force 1 Volt and more. Once they got past the initial horror of butchered shoes, the attendees got to appreciate the hidden details of these hyped sneakers and thank the sneaker gods that these weren’t one of theirs.

3) “All for sale!”

A standout feature at any sneaker convention – the trading pit. Sneakerlah 2019 was already a shopper’s paradise with rows of booths selling sneakers and streetwear, but the organizers took it to the next level by bringing the buy, trade and sell aspect of sneaker culture right to the middle of the action. The auction-style trading pit on the main stage definitely livened up the atmosphere of the event.

4) The sole-ution for every sneakerhead

For sneakerheads who “un-deadstocked” their grails just for Sneakerlah 2019, there’s always the fear of getting those crisp kicks dirty. But their fears were unfounded with @soletechnics on hand to buff off scuffs, smears and accidental food spills from eating on-the-go.

5) Bag the hype

Were you one of the lucky ones who needed to roll out of Sneakerlah 2019 with your mountain-high pile of purchases? The Supreme x Rimowa collaboration luggage would have done the trick – if you had at least RM17,000 (approx. S$5,588) to spare, that is.

6) Racking up a storm

Sneakerheads storming into Sneakerlah 2019 with their hottest kicks was only natural. But these? Only Ian Connor’s presence was missing from this massive lineup of Revenge x Storm sneakers.

7) Old skool, New Balance

The event packed plenty of covetable sneakers, no doubt. But it was refreshing to see the classics getting their time the spotlight too. Cue the New Balance 990 – the dad shoe that’s making a comeback in this modern era. A display of New Balance’s other classic shoes adorned in the signature greyscale colorway completed this section.

8) Hundred% unique

With their “Nasics Lemak” collaboration already generating so much hype for Sneakerlah 2019, you’d think Hundred% would just sit back and enjoy the event. But no, the retailer had an exclusive booth set up for sneaker customizations on the Air Force 1 – hydro dip prints in a variety of designs. At just RM50, together with a purchase of an Air Force 1 for RM369, attendees definitely scored a steal with this one.

9) Word search meets streetwear

Chinatown Market teamed up with retailer Sole What for a Sneakerlah 2019 exclusive: a word search tee in a range of colors. The Los Angeles-based streetwear label even distributed a free CTM marker to their first 40 customers. Were you one of the lucky 40?

10) Win big

The lucky draw at Sneakerlah this year took winning to another level. Specifically, to “Undefeated” level. Attendees stood a chance to win sneakers worth up to RM250,000 (approx. S$82,000). The grand prize? The employee-issue Undefeated Air Jordan 4s. Yes, someone did win a pair. If you missed out, be sure to free up your weekend for next year’s edition.
