Koflow and Rough Discuss the Lost Art of Turntablism
Koflow and Rough have a sit-down to talk about the lost art of turntablism and how it should be part and parcel of DJing.
Singapore DMC Champions Koflow and Rough have a sit-down to talk about the lost art of turntablism, while looking back at old footage from their glorious DMC days.
When the veterans liken scratching to “painting a picture with audio”, it’s easy to see why they cite originality and creativity as far more important traits that a DJ should have.
“If you can incorporate turntablism into your DJing, that’s an added skill which brings you to the forefront,” Rough said.
“Which is very important in this day and age,” Koflow added, “I see a lot of DJs, but they have no skills…they have no show.”
The video, produced by Mongrel, was inspired by a realization that turntablism was a criminally underrated art form that’s been watered down and under-appreciated, despite it being at the roots of DJing.
“I‘m not saying that modern DJing is bad, I’m just saying that people should know this aspect of it,” Toke of Mongrel told Straatosphere.
“I’m definitely in favor of DJ/producers, but when people overlook turntablism, that’s where i think it’s just bad.”
