2014 marks the 20th anniversary of one of Reebok’s most iconic and idiosyncratic runners, one that continues to polarize critics. As they say, you can’t love something you don’t understand. So we put ourselves in those shoes and address the misconceptions about the Insta Pump Fury once and for all.

Straight up, we’d be the first to admit the Insta Pump Fury looks kinda crazy, but rest assured, there is method in its madness. Its futuristic appearance boils down to a segmented design and a radically reduced midsole. The weird looking upper can be credited to the inflatable exo-skeleton, which holds the wearer’s foot down without the use of shoelaces. The shoe’s odd-looking nether region looks the way it does due to the GraphLight plate, Hexalite cushioning and synthetic materials, which leads to a reduced midsole.
