Urbanscapes, Malaysia’s largest and longest-running outdoor creative festival, will be back for the eleventh year running from November 23rd to 24th. Here are 6 acts you wouldn’t want to miss at the Big Weekend.
The Glasgow indie rockers have been nominated for several Grammys and have been the recipients of a whole host of awards throughout their illustrious career including the Mercury Prize, NME Awards, Brit Awards and MTV Awards. The band will be headlining at Urbanscapes, the only Southeast Asian stop of their 2013 tour.
Featured as BBC’s Sound of 2010, Last year, Two Door Cinema Club followed up their successful debut through a great sophomore effort with their second album, Beacon. Hailing from Northern Ireland, the trio has won crowds over in various festivals, including Glastonbury, Coachella and SummerSonic this year.
The Canadian indie rock twins will be touring in support of their seventh studio album Heartthrob, which was released in January 2013 and debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Influenced by synth pop and punk rock, the sisters who’ve been making music since 1995, have gained a steadfast following and been nominated for numerous awards, including the Juno Awards (quite a few times) and a Grammy Award for their Get Along DVD.
Kyoto Protocol is perhaps one of the most exciting acts to watch in the Malaysian music scene. In 2011, the band released their debut 5-track offering, An Album, with their first single Pussycat clinching the top spot on the Hitz.FM’s Malaysian English Top 10, FlyFM’s Campur Chart and TraxxFM’s Upstage Charts. No longer strangers to the big stage, they have opened for international acts such as MGMT, Yuna, CITIZENS!, We The Kings, and most recently, The Killers.
Capturing the quintessential sounds of lo-fi Spectorgaze, Singapore’s Obedient Wives Club released their self-titled four-track debut EP in late 2011, which was voted by SEA INDIE as one of the Top 10 Southeast Asia’s Best Indie-pop Releases of 2010-11. On February 2013, the band released their sophomore EP titled Murder Kill Baby. And mostly, you don’t want to miss the band that doesn’t care too much about being weird, or not having a management, a publicist, or the help of crowd-funding.
This year, The Comedy Club KL comes to Urbanscapes with Andrew Netto who is primed to be the next Malaysian comedy superstar. Andrew is one of the hottest young comedians in the Malaysian circuit who has enjoyed considerable success in the local and international comedy scene. With his yearly show Andrew Netto Live, Andrew’s ability to take observations of the most mundane things in life and turn them into whip-sharp comedy will keep you endlessly amused and entertained.
