Art Bar at The Butter Factory opened its doors for the first time last weekend to reveal an artsy, edgy setting that aims to revive the bar culture. To celebrate its launch, it threw two parties – one on Friday (Jul 19th) and another on Saturday (Jul 20th).
In keeping with the theme of “Up-cycling”, Art Bar’s decor features recycled items such as floppy disks (floppy what?) and plastic utensils used to create eclectic, eye-catching furniture.
Aaron Han, Visual Display Artist at The Butter Factory said, “Up-cycling as a theme came naturally as we were re-purposing the room. We were changing the function of the room and not just the visual interior, so we applied it to every aspect of Art Bar, from the food packaging re-worked to form a chandelier, to the vinyl records used as bill folders, to the VHS tapes re-purposed as our menus. It was about giving everyday objects a new lease of life – sort of a second coming. Everyday objects re-done in an unexpected way.”
The cocktails, specially created by mixologist Ethan Leslie Leong, were served in retrograde motion – in old school tin mugs and plastic soy sauce squeeze bottles.
On Saturday, the newest member of the AOS collective, DJ Tang, was introduced to the crowd. He then proceeded to fuel the night with good sounds of hip-hop.
In conjunction with the launch of Art Bar, AOS teamed up with New York based streetwear designer Jeff Staple to release a collaborative t-shirt and snapback cap. Featuring the AOS logo against the signature Staple pigeon in camo, the tee and cap will be available for sale at Actually and This is Alley.
Don’t miss Art Bar’s weekly Saturday Night Social, an open-format, non-commercial weekly staple that covers a spectrum of the 4/4 and more: from Nu-Disco to House, from Afro Beats to UK Garage. At the helm are Art Bar’s resident DJs Dave Does (AOS) and Zushan, so take comfort – your Saturday nights will be in good hands.
