Have you been noticing more people are wearing football jerseys as fashion? Well, that’s one of the hallmarks of the blokecore trend for you. The humble football jersey has gone from the pitches to the streets, and are now seen on celebrities and even on high fashion runways. How exactly did this happen? We answer all your questions on the rise of blokecore, how to style it and give our picks of the best jerseys you can grab from Nike.com

What is blokecore?

Blokecore is a blend between fashion and football, usually an outfit consisting of a football jersey paired with some loose-fit denim jeans and sneakers. The fits are usually very basic, with the star of the show being the football jersey, of course.

Now, you might be wondering what “blokecore” means. The term “bloke” originates from the UK, and it stands for “a man” or “guy” who is usually obsessed with football. Whereas “-core” is a suffix used for fashion trends, such as barbiecore or gorpcore. Blokecore is an elevation of the average bloke’s apparel choices but refined with streetwear sensibilities.

The rise of blokecore

Did you know that the blokecore trend started as satire? In December of 2021, Brandon Huntley posted a Tiktok in his soccer jersey, straight-cut jeans and a pair of white sneakers, with the words, “Hottest trend of 2022: bloke core”, in response to the ongoing debates on toxic masculinity at the time. And with that, he started one of 2022’s biggest trends that has endured till present time.

His video ended up going viral and has garnered over 280,000 views thus far. The aesthetic gradually gained more traction from late 2021 to early 2022. To date, the blokecore hashtag has garnered 276.6 million views on Tiktok and over 20,000 posts on Instagram.

The FIFA World Cup in 2022 helped to drive the aesthetic forward as it brought the soccer community together at pubs, where fans would sport their favorite team’s jerseys. Even after Argentina’s triumph in the World Cup finals, the blokecore trend continued growing. Apart from the World Cup, key figures such as Héctor Bellerín, a fashion icon and professional football player, helped to popularize the look. When his team won the Copa del Rey finals, he was wearing a vintage-looking football jersey with jeans and a pair of Nike sneakers, which fit the blokecore aesthetic perfectly.

How to style blokecore

If you’re looking to try out the blokecore style but are not quite sure how to go about it, here are some tips:

– Bottoms: Opt for baggy trousers or straight-cut jeans for a more relaxed look that ties in perfectly with the vibe of soccer jerseys. For a vintage aesthetic, opt for second-hand denim.

– Shoes: Suede or leather sneakers would go well with blokecore outfits thanks to their versatility. It is also best to go for timeless sneakers from the past, such as the classic Air Force 1s (see our AF1 guide).

– Tops: When choosing your soccer jersey, size up so you get that relaxed, loose-fitting look. If you want a vintage look, you could get a modern jersey with a retro-inspired design or simply choose a modern jersey for a more chic look.

Now that you know what blokecore is and how to style the aesthetic, it should be clear that the football jersey is the star of the blokecore fit. If you want to embrace the footy-inspired style, shop our selection of both modern and retro-inspired jerseys below!
