Jerry Lorenzo is bringing back the Converse Skidgrip in the name of ‘80s nostalgia. The underrated high cut sneaker makes its comeback in a vibrant, patterned upper that’s reminiscent of the sneakers of that era.
The Skidgrip made its debut as the Converse Circular Vamp Oxford (CVO), a pair of tennis sneakers. Over the years, Converse would adapt the shoe for basketball, boating and finally, skating. Seven models of the CVO were given anti-slip outsoles, which gave it its new nickname, the Skidgrip.
“I found the Skidgrip in the mall and it became my favorite shoe from that summer,” Jerry Lorenzo professed. As an homage to his childhood in Southern California in the ’80s, Lorenzo’s take on the Skidgrip is covered in a bold print featuring patterns and shapes which are unmistakably inspired by Converse’s collaboration with JAM, a staple release for the brand in the ’80s. Even the branded tongue tabs emulate the text print seen on old Converse kicks.
Despite the retro-looking aesthetics, the Fear of God x Converse Skidgrip is very much in step with Jerry Lorenzo’s signature style: It has a monotone midsole, sharp toe box and a sleek 30-degree slope from heel to forefoot. Think of it as an ‘80s interpretation of the Fear of God 101 line of sneakers.
The Fear of God x Converse Skidgrip is slated to drop on August 27. No details yet on a Singapore release, so stay tuned for updates.
