Guide to New Balance 991v2: Sizing tips and styling notes

Dover Street Market has released a special-edition New Balance 991v2 to celebrate the London Marathon. Here’s your guide to the New Balance 991v2 complete with sizing tips and styling notes.

Dover Street Market

Earlier this month, New Balance partnered up with acclaimed multi-brand store Dover Street Market to release a special, limited-edition ‘Made in UK’ 991v2 sneaker. This exclusive silhouette is designed to mark the TCS London Marathon – you can spot the logo on the footbed. It’s constructed with the same premium suede, mesh and synthetic fabrics that those familiar with the style will know and love, but an all-black colorway lends a sleek finish. With this latest drop in mind, here’s your complete guide to the New Balance 991v2.

New Balance 991 Origins

The story of the New Balance 991 goes back to 2001 when it launched as part of the brand’s 99x series. The cult collection featured shoes made in the factory in Cumbria, UK, spearheading what would become the now-iconic ‘Made in UK’ category. The 991 was the first shoe that saw New Balance using an Abzorb insert in both the forefoot and underheel. It also featured the new Ndurance rubber compound for durability. So the 991 was a turning point for the Boston brand’s technical language.

By the time an update was due, the 991 had achieved icon status. For the 991v2, the shoe was given a subtle makeover: Abzorb was replaced by cutting-edge FuelCell softness. The 991v2 also marks the first New Balance shoe to be fully designed and built in the company’s UK headquarters.

A cult favorite

The 991 quickly became a fan favorite across subcultures for its sleek appearance and undeniable comfort. The grey colorway, in particular, has become ubiquitous across the last two decades alongside the rest of the 99x series.

Both the 991 and 991v2 have undergone several collaborative design partnerships with the likes of Palace, Patta, Stone Island, Jjjjound and Stray Rats as well as the recent DSM drop, solidifying its popularity across fashion and beyond.

Sizing the 991 and 991v2

Like most other 99x sneakers, the 991 and 991v2 have a relatively forgiving construction and wide toebox. As such, regardless of your foot width, we recommend going true-to-size for a perfect fit with the 991v2.

Styling the 991 and 991v2

Lean into the 991’s early Noughties origins with Y2K styling: baggy blue denim, oversized tees and baseball caps. For the ultimate NB-coded look, embracing its ‘dad sneaker’ reputation is key – opt for relaxed fits with a sportswear twist.
