Following #LeggingsGate, PUMA Extends 20% Discount to United Passengers

The athletic-wear brand weighs in on #LeggingsGate with a timely promotion.

PUMA US offers United Airlines passengers a 20% discount off leggings after the airline company bans two passengers for sporting the athleisure staple.

Last Sunday, March 26, United Airlines banned two teenage girls in leggings from boarding a flight, claiming that leggings were a violation of the airline’s internal dress code.

The incident, tweeted by another passenger Shannon Watts, quickly gained attention online, and even earned the hashtag #LeggingsGate.

In response, United Airlines released a statement identifying the teenage girls as “pass riders”, meaning they are family members of an employee and that “all employees and pass riders are considered representatives of United.” The statement goes on to say, “And like most companies, we have a dress code that we ask employees and pass riders to follow”.

United concluded its statement by saying that regular passengers, on the other hand, are allowed to travel in leggings.

PUMA took the opportunity to turn this into a winning moment for its brand. Following news of the incident, it took to Twitter to announce that United Airlines passengers are entitled to a 20% discount on all leggings at any PUMA US store. Those who want to avail of the promotion that runs till Sunday, April 9, will simply have to present their United Airlines ticket in person. Not a stretch, right?
