Revealed: The Mystery Behind That Extra Shoelace Hole

Contrary to popular belief, there is a purpose for the last shoelace hole found on almost all running shoes, and it could actually make your next run a better one. Here’s how.

Like many people out there, we never quite knew what that last shoelace hole was meant for. Now, the people at Illumiseen have unraveled the mystery and figured out a potential use of the extra shoelace hole with what they call the “heel lock” or “lace lock”.

Unlike the usual shoelacing methods where the lace doesn’t maintain its tightness after the first knot, this method actually creates extra friction between the laces at the wearer’s ankle, keeping both the ankle and heel area nice and tight.

It’s a nifty trick that involves creating a loop by poking the laces through the last shoelace hole, followed by cross-threading the laces past the loops before tying a knot. Through the “heel/lace lock”, runners can avoid having blisters at the heel area thanks to the snug fit the lock provides. It also prevents black toenails as the toes no longer hit the tip of the shoe.

Try this shoe hack the next time you go for a jog, it might just make your run more comfortable!
