This Puma x Staple collab inspired by Gidra drops in Singapore

Now available in Singapore, this Jeff Staple x Puma collab revolves around Gidra, a newspaper that was run by young Asian American activists in the ‘70s. In light of recent hate towards the AAPI community, this collection wants to draw attention to the positive creative force among its members.

The Staple x Puma ‘Gidra’ collection, which will arrive in Singapore in two phases, pays tribute to Gidra – an Asian-American student-run newspaper that is regarded as one of the most influential publications in the 60’s and 70’s. Just like the publication, the latest collaboration from Staple and Puma is a reaction to the recent spike in hate crimes targeted at the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and its alleged Chinese origins. The collection merges the cut and colors of the Godzilla-inspired King Terror Pack from Puma and the design elements from Gidra publications.

“It’s cool to be able to make a great product that people want to rock, but then also add some element of messaging into it. Coming out of COVID, Asian Americans were really facing a lot of challenges. In the 1960s and 70s, Asians were also facing a lot of great challenges and that’s when I discovered Gidra. And I used that as the inspiration for my newest collection with Puma,” explained Staple in an interview with Straatosphere.

Phase one dropped in early March. The second drop of the collection includes two Suede sneaker models and a Slipstream silhouette. Following the likeliness of King Ghidorah, one of the Suede models will come in a yellow hue and the other will come in a black and grey colorway. The Slipstream style will come in a combination of grey, white and yellow colorway. The footwear pieces will be accompanied by an apparel line, which will feature hoodies, tees, anorak jackets and pants.
