Since most basketball games and championships are played on indoor courts, it should come as no surprise that most basketball sneakers are designed to be used on hardwood floors. Brands release very few basketball sneakers that hold up against the harshness of the tarmac on outdoor courts. To help you find the perfect outdoor basketball shoes, we have created a list of the best options available in 2023 and offer some tips for choosing the right shoe.
An outdoor basketball shoe is specially made for usage on courts featuring a firmer surface like asphalt or concrete – a common material used in outdoor courts. These shoes provide enhanced durability, traction and support to withstand the harsher conditions and surface textures of outdoor courts.
-Thicker uppers: Offer better ankle support and help prevent excessive foot movements, reducing the risk of sprains or injuries.
-Thicker outsoles: Made of strong rubber to prevent ripping on the hard court. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are heavy. Outdoor models like the Jordan Luka 1 are especially lightweight on the feet.
-Deep and wide traction grooves: Provides better grip on rough surfaces and minimizes the risk of slipping. Models like the DON Issue 4 and Li-Ning’s Wade All City 11 have a wide outsole, giving wearers good support as it helps with traction and stability.
We don’t recommend indoor basketball shoes for outdoor courts as doing so will wear out the thin, flexible soles of indoor basketball shoes. The outsoles can rip if they are subjected to the rough elements of outdoor courts and their grip pattern may struggle to grip on outdoor flooring.
On the other hand, while outdoor basketball shoes can be used on indoor courts, we don’t recommend it. This is because outdoor basketball shoes tend to have a different grip pattern and are slightly heavier than their indoor counterparts hence basketball shoes made for indoor courts are the preferred choice for optimum performance on hardwood courts.
When choosing between a high or low top basketball sneaker, consider your need for ankle support and your playing style. High tops offer added ankle support but can feel more restrictive and heavier on-feet. On the other hand, low-top sneakers are much lighter and support a more dynamic, fast-paced playing style. Mid-top sneakers, like those offered by New Balance, stride the perfect balance between support and lightness. For more tips, check out this basketball shoes guide.
