Barcelona’s long-term contract extension, which kicks in from 2018, is almost twice of Manchester United’s 10-year deal with adidas that’s worth £75m per season.

“It is a figure which puts us No. 1 in the world for sponsorship in the sports industry,” the Spanish club’s vice-president Manuel Arroyo said.

Nike’s contract with the 24-time La Liga champions runs till 2023, with the possibility of another five-year extension should Barcelona’s members vote in favor of it.

The money will come in useful when it comes to signing new players and keeping present stars like Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr. and Luis Suarez.

“Neymar has renewed and now we are trying so that Suarez stays here for many years to come and then we will speak with Messi of course,” said club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. “He is the catalyst, the one that makes everything else function.”
