Chanel Boomerang Worth S$2,000 Mocks Indigenous Australians

Chanel is facing backlash for its S$2,000 boomerang.

The Chanel boomerang, which recently resurfaced in a tweet by makeup artist Jeffree Star, has led to netizens crying cultural appropriation.

The wood and resin Chanel boomerang, priced at about S$2,000, has been part of Chanel’s sports collection for quite some time.

Netizens were, of course, fired up. The price of the boomerang being one of the immediate points of mockery online.

But the luxury “sport” accessory, happens to also have been “a weapon for survival” for Indigenous Australians.

The Internet decried the cultural appropriation of Aboriginal Australians. According to Guardian, the Chanel boomerang costs nearly 10 percent of the average income of Indigenous Australians.

Others made light of their indignation:

Since the debacle, Chanel has released a statement of apology saying that the brand was “extremely committed to respecting all cultures, and regrets that some may have felt offended.”
