“Avatar” Will Have Four Sequels, Says James Cameron

Four Avatar sequels means we’ll be seeing the Na’vi species on the big screen for years to come.

After years of leaving fans in limbo, James Cameron, director of Avatar, has confirmed that he has four follow-up films in the pipeline.

Avatar was released in 2009 and enjoyed critical reception for its extensive use of CGI. The fantasy film paved the way for more filmmakers to create 3D movies and even propelled lead actor Sam Worthington to stardom.

Now, Cameron has said that there will be four sequels, to be released in December 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Based on the IMDB movie pages, Worthington, along with fellow cast members Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang, are set to reprise their roles.

According to Variety, Cameron had envisioned two sequels after the box office success of Avatar. A meeting with screenwriters and “some of the top artists and designers in the world” led him to realize that he had too much material for two movies. He then decided to increase the run to three, before eventually bumping it up to four.

“So far, what I am seeing in pure imagination is far beyond the first film,” Cameron said to Variety. “We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga.”

This is only the second time that Cameron has directed sequels, the first being The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The award-winning filmmaker has also directed hits such as Aliens and Titanic.
