Adidas has turned to cult studio Jjjjound to reimagine the much-loved Samba, and the result exemplifies the Montreal label’s intentional design direction. The hotly anticipated release was first teased back in November 2022 with early leaked imagery, but an official look at the updated Sambas wasn’t shared until December 2023.
The signature Samba is given a premium leather upgrade and the first delivery keeps things simple with two monochrome colorways – black with white stripes and white with black stripes. Considered touches mark it as a partnership: note the co-branded sock liners and custom vintage hang tags.
The focus is, as always, on craftsmanship: each pair is made in Adidas’ Scheinfeld factory in Germany by dedicated artisans. Behind-the-scenes content sheds a light on the precision-based processes behind each individual shoe, celebrating the expertise behind the project. The collaboration pays tribute to the two brands’ shared values, placing craft at the core to bring new life to one of Adidas’ most celebrated sneaker models.
Fans of Jjjjound will be familiar with its origins. It first launched in 2006 by Justin R. Saunders as a digital mood board and quickly gained cult status beyond design enthusiasts for its work as a collaborative studio. Jjjjound’s singular aesthetic is one of expressive minimalism: think careful color palettes and timeless shapes that have resulted in countless memorable collaborations.
The first batch of the Jjjjound x Adidas Samba is set for a global release on March 27 at Jjjjound.com.
