Adidas pays homage to Run-DMC with a laceless Superstar

Run-DMC was the first music act to be associated with the laceless Adidas Superstar.

Update: February 10, 6pm (Singapore time)
The laceless Adidas Superstar will be dropping on February 13 for S$160. You can pick up the sneaker at Adidas stores located at Pacific Plaza, Vivocity, Bugis+ and Paragon Shopping Centre.

The 80s hip-hop royals are credited for the popularity of the shell-toe sneaker, so as a nod to their shared history, Adidas is releasing a laceless Adidas Superstar.

Run-DMC was truly a pioneer when it came to creating a relationship between music and sneaker culture. With the single “My Adidas”, Run-DMC formed an everlasting bond with the German brand.

Run-DMC members Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell famously rocked their Adidas Superstars lace free – the way prisoners whose laces have been taken away to prevent suicide attempts wear them. Matched with black jeans, leather jackets and gold chains, this look quickly became synonymous with the hip-hop group. The single and the trio’s frequent appearance in the sneakers resulted in the then-aging court shoes’ popularity skyrocketing. Fan trawled to cop a pair and eventually, the Superstars became a staple in every sneakerhead’s closet.

As part of their 50th anniversary celebrations, it only makes sense that Adidas would drop a pair that commemorates the impact Run-DMC had on the sneaker’s longevity. That’s where the laceless Adidas Superstar comes in.

The sneaker will drop in the classic black/white and white/black colorways. The sneaker remains relatively unchanged except for the lack of laces. So, you can expect the same plush leather on the uppers, a fat tongue with the golden Adidas badge and “Superstar” written in gold alongside the three stripes.

At the moment, no date has been set for a Singapore release. Stay tuned for updates!
