New Balance reimagines the timeless 574

Named the New Balance 57/40, the revamped 574 has been given modern proportions that play on its ‘80s-inspired design. The sneaker hits shelves on January 9.

Where the ‘80s meets the ‘90s: The 57/40 retains most of the signature design elements of the 5xx line, except that these are applied to a chunkier, ’90s-inspired midsole. Even the sneaker’s iconic CR device has been exaggerated to fit the new midsole.

Everything’s bigger on the 57/40, mirroring other releases like the New Balance 327. It gets an enlarged “N” logo and a more pronounced traction pattern on the outsole — a nod to the 574’s trail heritage.

Self-expression is the priority: The new 57/40 will arrive in bolder colorways. The first two models will come with neutral uppers that act as the backdrop for its vibrant midsoles.

Final note: The New Balance 57/40 strikes an interesting balance been heritage design and modern flamboyance. Like the 327, the 57/40 offers a new take on a heritage design, making it a cultured piece of footwear for the modern sneakerhead.
