New Balance XC-72: Asian sizing tips and styling notes

The New Balance XC-72 continues the Shifted line – mixing retro elements with modern sneaker sensibilities. This is your sizing and styling guide to the New Balance XC-72.

New Balance has released their latest sneaker from the Shifted line – the XC-72. The retro-futuristic sneaker is the successor to the immensely successful New Balance 327. Designed with the same concept in mind, the sneaker merges various retro New Balance runners with modern sensibilities to form an entirely new silhouette inspired by their heritage. Here’s our review of the New Balance XC-72 and our guide to sizing and styling them.

How does it feel on feet?

Even though they are designed as a follow-up to the 327, the XC-72 feels vastly different on feet. The midsole height on the XC-72 is a lot smaller as compared to the 327, which does offer more stability. Cushioning has been dialed down a little on the XC-72, offering a sensation similar to that of the classic 574.

The outsole is split in half, featuring round lugs from the 327 and the angular protrusions from the XC-15. Both sides stretch up to the toe box, forming a firm mudguard. Especially on brighter colorways, the mudguard adds a textured look to the design of the sneaker.

Just like other sneakers from the Shifted line (327, 57/40, 237), the sneaker’s upper is constructed out of high-quality suedes, leathers and mesh panels. They feel very plush and comfortable on feet, especially with the super smooth sock liner. At the heel, a hard-plastic heel cap enhances lockdown. When paired with the forefoot mudguards, the XC-72 really holds your foot in place.

What size XC-72 to buy?

Unlike prior Shifted sneakers from New Balance, we would recommend buying your true size of half a size up. The sneaker is not only a little narrow, like the 327, but the raised mudguard prevents any stretching or widening. As such, if you have wide feet, it’s best to try them in-store to get the exact fit. The XC-72 will not stretch around the forefoot.

If you wear a US9 New Balance 327, it’s best to cop the XC-72 in US9. If you have wide feet, it’s best to go up to US9.5.

How to style the XC-72?

Styling the XC-72 is pretty easy. The silhouette is incredibly bold but thus far, New Balance has kept the colorways pretty simple and muted colorways. As such, they would look good dressed up with pants and a shirt or dressed down with a hoodie and sweatpants. But just like the 327 and 57/40, its wider stance is best paired with wider set pants. These kicks offer fuss-free versatility.
