Oktoberfest Special: A BYOB (Brew Your Own Beer) Guide

The Reward

After all your hard work, you’ll have an enticing batch of freshly-brewed beer at your disposal, but how does it compare price-wise to just heading out and buying a case of beer? Our homebrewers say there are savings to be had.

“It costs about $50 to make 23 liters, or 70 cents for a 330ml can,” Raymond says. The cost of production of course varies depending on your ingredients and how you use them, as Timothy points out. “The cost of a recipe can vary widely depending on how much hops you use. For a five gallon batch (approximately 19 liters) the cost can be anywhere from $40 to $120 depending on how ‘big’ a beer you’re trying to make, alcohol and flavor wise.” Buying your ingredients in bulk and reusing yeast from batch to batch will also lower costs.
