“Overwatch” Celebrates First Birthday with Free Play and More Surprises

Blizzard Entertainment rewards fans with a number of Overwatch themed surprises.

Blizzard Entertainment celebrates Overwatch’s first birthday with an immersive behind the scenes video, a birthday event, a “Game of the Year” edition, and free play.

The game was first released May 24, 2016. Today, the competitive team shooter game has over 30 million players worldwide.

To commemorate Overwatch’s first anniversary, Blizzard Entertainment has released a slick “behind the scenes” video for its doting fans. Watch as the crew detail their excitement and nerves for the game’s online launch.

Additionally, Overwatch will also reward its fans with a celebratory birthday event, the Overwatch Anniversary event. Information is still scarce but according to The Verge, fans can expect to see a number of anniversary-themed character skins, new character emotes and voice lines. The Overwatch Anniversary event will launch Tuesday, 23 May and ends Monday, June 12.

As if the anniversary event isn’t enough, Blizzard Entertainment is also releasing a digital “Game of the Year” edition for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Those who purchase the Overwatch “Game of the Year” edition will also receive a number of in-game bonuses for other Blizzard Entertainment games such as StarCraft II, World of Warcraft and Diablo III.

According to IGN, the Game of the Year Edition will include:

Overwatch

    • 10 Loot Boxes
    • Vintage Blackwatch Reyes, Strike-Commander Morrison, Overgrown Bastion, Security Chief Phara, and Slipstream Tracer skins.

Heroes of the Storm

  • Tracer.

World of Warcraft:

  • Baby Winston pet.

Diablo III

  • Mercy’s wings.

StarCraft II

  • Portraits of Tracer, Reaper, Pharah, Winston, Bastion, and Soldier: 76.

Hearthstone:

  • Overwatch-themed card back.

Finally, in an attempt to entice new game players. Blizzard is offering those interested in trying out Overwatch a free weekend from Friday, May 26 to Monday, May 29. New players will also have access to a number of Overwatch in-game goodies such as the ability to level up and unlock customization items.
