Korea’s StarCraft ProLeague, which was formed in 2003, has been discontinued.

The announcement was made by KeSPA (Korean Esports Association), with chairman Jun Byung Hun saying that “the drop in the number of ProLeague teams and players, difficulty securing league sponsors, and match fixing issues have made it challenging to maintain ProLeague”.
While StarCraft and its sequel have enjoyed immense popularity among gamers, the series has been overtaken by newer titles like League of Legends and Overwatch.
Match-fixing scandals which have plagued the ProLeague also contributed to its demise. That said, there might be a silver lining for diehard StarCraft gamers. It’s rumored that a potential HD remake will be announced at the upcoming BlizzCon 2016 convention, giving non-competitive fans a chance to revisit the game.
