Straat Picks: 5 Movies to Watch in May 2015

This month’s movies explore realities that range from the scorching desert to a spine-chilling disaster, proving that the world isn’t always what it seems.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Scheduled release: May 14th
Director: George Miller
Cast: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult

Tom Hardy, one of the finest leading men to have graced the silver screen, will be showing up in this remake of the original Mad Max movies that made a star out of Mel Gibson. This could be Hardy’s grittiest role yet, following a string of solid performances in The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless.

A man haunted by tumultuous past, Max (Tom Hardy) takes to the deserts alone as a form of reprieve. Unfortunately, he gets caught up with a fleeing group, led by Furiosa (Charlize Theron). Together, they fend off a tyrant and his gang who are intent on leaving Max and his crew buried dead in the sand.

Pitch Perfect 2

Scheduled release: May 14th
Director: Elizabeth Banks
Cast: Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp

When Pitch Perfect was released back in 2012, it was a surprising hit with the audience, thanks to Rebel Wilson’s hilarious antics and Anna Kendrick’s fantastic rendition of the hit song “Cups”. Couple that with its box office earnings of over US$64 million in the USA, and it’s no surprise that the execs decided to give the go-ahead for this sequel.

The Barden Bellas make their return, and following a terrible performance, they enter an international competition in hopes that it will regain their status and right to perform. The only problem is that the competition has never been won by an American group. Will they be the first? Enter our giveaway to win Pitch Perfect 2 tickets and find out for yourself!

Spy

Scheduled release: May 21st
Director: Paul Feig
Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne

Melissa McCarthy may not fit the usual mold of what a Hollywood actress should look like, but the former stand-up comedian has held her own over the years and taken on unconventional roles in an array of movies, proving that looks can only get you that far in the film industry.

In Spy, McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, an unassuming CIA analyst who works the desk job. When fellow agents Bradley (Jude Law) and Rick (Jason Statham) fail to complete the mission, Susan steps in to infiltrate the underworld and prevent a global disaster from happening.

Tomorrowland

Scheduled release: May 21st
Director: Brad Bird
Cast: George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson

The charming George Clooney may be a bachelor no more, and if the upcoming Tomorrowland is anything to go by, he could be channeling more paternal roles in movies.

Pushing the boundaries of reality and ushering in a wild sense of imagination, this film sees former boy-genius Frank (George Clooney) teaming up with optimistic teen Casey (Britt Robertson) who go on a mission to unearth the secrets behind a mysterious space known as “Tomorrowland”.

San Andreas

Scheduled release: May 28th
Director: Brad Peyton
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson continues to dazzle Hollywood, with a successive list of movies that have proven to be box office gold. Last seen in Fast & Furious 7, the hulking action superstar headlines this thriller that’s less about fighting the bad guys and more of sidestepping Mother Nature.

A massive earthquake is triggered in California, and it’s up to search and rescue helicopter pilot Ray (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife to make their way to San Francisco to save their only daughter. The journey is undoubtedly fraught with dangerous situations that leave the couple caught up in precarious situations, and audiences can expect to be riveted by the mayhem this film presents.
