Here’s our pick of celebrities and sports personalities who have performed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to bring awareness to the neurodegenerative disease.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral worldwide, attracting celebrities, professional athletes and even regular folks to dump a bucket of iced water over themselves and nominating others to do likewise.
The Challenge aims to bring awareness to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It’s also a fundraising effort for the ALS Association as they research for breakthroughs to the neurodegenerative disease. The Association just announced that it has received almost $23 million thanks to the movement.
Without further ado, here are the top 10 ALS Ice Bucket Challenges we’ve seen so far:
Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau, looking young for his age (he’s 52 by the way), is clearly enthusiastic about the challenge. Carrying water and ice to a building’s rooftop, and speaking in a mix of Mandarin and Cantonese, Lau dumps the water on himself with a full view of Hong Kong in the background. The Heavenly King even mounted a camera in the bucket to give us some added perspective.
Out at an open field, the Wolverine, along with fellow actors Garrett Hedlund and Rooney Mara, got the entire cast and crew of the upcoming film Pan to perform the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Cue a whole bunch of screaming people, smoke effects and Jackman dumping not one, but two buckets of water over himself.
Bill Gates, the brains behind Microsoft, might have taken a backseat in the corporate world, but he’s not backing away from this challenge. The philanthropist not only designed a contraption to hang the bucket, he even hammed it up for the camera by “welding” the structure. Unlike other people, Gates used a rope to tip the bucket over – what a genius.
Proving he’s human just like any of us, Facebook’s co-founder Mark Zuckerberg douses himself in cold liquid. We hope it woke him up enough to donate part of his enormous wealth to charity.
We’ve known Chris Pratt to be a funny guy, but we didn’t expect him to down a small bottle of Blue Ice Vodka, followed by a bigger bottle of Smirnoff Ice, before getting all drenched as wife Anna Farris and his mother dumps icy-cold water on him multiple times.
Talkshow host Jimmy Fallon, nominated by many people including Justin Timberlake, decided to carry out the challenge on his show. Fallon even pulled in his guests along with hip hop/neo soul band The Roots, encouraging the audience to make a donation as well.
We’re not sure which is funnier, seeing King James perform the challenge out in the open seas, or screaming like a little girl afterward. Props to him though, for nominating President Barack Obama to do the challenge. Cmon Mr. Prez!
Not one to shy away from the limelight, Charlie Sheen readily accepted the challenge. But as he dumped the bucket on himself, not a drop of water came out. Instead, he made it rain on himself with money totaling $10,000. The actor put it on record that the money would be donated to the ALS Foundation. His rationale? “Ice is going to melt, but this money is actually going to help people”. Sheen, you’re definitely #winning this time.
Granted, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge isn’t very difficult to perform, but we never expected one person to take the challenge to new heights, literally. Ice hockey player Paul Bissonnette took a trip up to the mountains, stripped down to his underwear, and got a helicopter to pour glacier water all over him. By far one of the most epic ways to complete the challenge.
Dave, oh Dave, why are you so awesome? The frontman of rock band Foo Fighters re-enacts the chilling scene from supernatural horror film Carrie, where the titular character gets pig’s blood splashed all over her. Of course, iced water is used for Dave’s version, which intersperses with clips from the original film for full dramatic effect. Good job, Dave!
