From September, the UEFA Champions League will be streamed live on Facebook.
According to Bloomberg, this new deal includes the streaming of two live matches per day from the group stages, four rounds of 16 matches, and four quarterfinal matches.
Additionally, several of these matches will be exclusive to the social media platform and will not be aired on television.
Football, or soccer, which is the most followed sport on Facebook, is particularly suited for social media because it allows fans to interact and discuss various aspects of the game online.
In fact, over 34 million fans had 98 million interactions on Facebook for the recently concluded Champions League final.
Fox Sports, which already produces original programs on Facebook, hopes that this deal would help bring football and the Champions League tournament to a broader audience.
“There are more matches in English and Spanish than we have networks to air them on,” said Fox Sport in an interview. “Facebook has one of the most social soccer audiences on the web, and this is going to expose the Champions’ League to fans who aren’t tuning into a game on TV.”
The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious club competition in European football. The competition proper starts on September 12, 2017.
