Step aside Angela Lee, May Ooi’s in town.
The exciting news was first announced on the organization’s official website on July 10.
The former Olympian will make her MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) debut at the ONE: Quest for Greatness, in Kuala Lumpur against Malaysian MMA fighter, Ann Osman on Friday, August 18.
But this isn’t Ooi’s first foray into the world of MMA fighting. The 40-year-old athlete is trained in the Brazillian art of Capoeira and holds a professional MMA record of two wins and two losses writes The New Paper.
The former swimmer also made headlines earlier in October 2015, after the Asian fighting organization expressed their interest in the Capoeira-trained athlete. As a result, great expectations are in order for Ooi’s first fight.
Ooi’s ONE Championship venture has undoubtedly sparked excitement. Many reports have expressed their interest in seeing the newcomer battle ONE FC’s atomweight champion, Angela Lee.
“I’ll be ready for it. Everybody has her strengths and weaknesses, and I’ll play to my strengths if the match-up happens. Angela’s a good fighter, she is very skilled, and I have a lot of respect for her,” says Ooi in an interview with The New Paper.
The fighting organization has yet to schedule a match between its golden girl, Angela Lee, and newcomer May Ooi. Despite this, ONE Championship’s chairman and founder Chatri Sityodtong has expressed interest in the clash.
Sounds like a match to look out for.
ONE: Quest for Greatness will take place on Friday, August 18 at Kuala Lumpur’s Stadium Negara. More information to come.
