Feature photo: NOISE x GIF Fest
1) Noise x GIF Fest 2017 is mostly free.
Except for a few workshops and talks, the festival is mostly free for you to attend. The main event will feature an immersive exhibition of over 50 original GIFs, created by young local artists in an Open Call that was held last month. These specially commissioned GIFs will be showcased via projections, large screens, and secret rooms. In fact, the entire experience will be like visiting a nightclub or space museum than a traditional art gallery.
2) Enjoy live musical performances.
Need some music to accompany the flashing lights and disorienting visuals? Festival-goers can look forward to a special edition of ‘Good Times’ featuring a live set between Kiat from Syndicate and Deborah Emmanuel (watch the video above), Singapore’s foremost spoken word poet. There will also be a live performance by local indie-electronic duo dot.gif.
3) Attend a GIF-making masterclass by renown street photographer Aik Beng Chia
Bring your photos to life in this GIF-making masterclass by Aik Beng Chia. In this 1.5-hour workshop, Aik Beng will demonstrate and share the many dos and don’ts of creating stunning cinemagraphs, GIFs, and ploatagraphs. This workshop is a must-attend for bloggers, photographers, and visual storytellers. Tickets are being sold here for S$5. Act quickly because seats are limited.
4) Harness the power of GIFs.
Advertising agency BBH Singapore will be giving a talk on how brands and individuals can use GIFs to better communicate with their audience. Ideal for those in the creative industry, this session will help you explore the linguistics secrets of GIFs and the different ways to harness its power. Admission is free, but you’ll need to register your interest here.
5) Discover more about GIFs
Did you know that the GIF turns 30 this year? Despite its “age”, the medium only picked up in popularity in recent years. Now a cornerstone of Internet culture, GIFs can be found on most websites, especially on social media platforms like Facebook and Tumblr. Besides memes, its versatility also allows it to be used to communicate emotions and tell interesting stories. Discover its true potential at Singapore’s very first GIF Festival.
