Vaporwaffle inspired by women’s first marathon race

The Sacai x Nike Vaporwaffle is inspired by the 1984 Pegasus, which debuted in the first-ever women’s marathon race. These drop on November 6.

The year was 1984, and the Olympics was forever changed when women’s marathon and 3km races were added to the line up of events.

Three months after the committee decision, Joan Benoit Samuelson went on to become the first woman to win a marathon, clocking in a time of 2:24:52.

The shoes that took Samuelson to the finishing line were the 1984 Nike Pegasus and Sacai, in coming up with its next collaboration with Nike, looked to this momentous time in history.

The result? A silhouette dubbed the Vaporwaffle, which is inspired by the ’84 Pegasus, but fitted with Nike’s latest technology.

The stacked midsole shows a clear progression from old to new running technologies. Right under the upper is a sculpted, modern midsole taken from the Vaporfly. Contrasting that is a blocky, retro midsole and outsole from the ’84 Pegasus.

The overall colorway is inspired by the OG Pegasus, which sported a simple cream base, red Swooshes and blue heel slab.

Just like prior releases in Nike’s collaborations with Sacai, the Vaporwaffle has a double-layered midsole and upper. Up top, the sneaker receives an Atomknit-like base layered with suede and leather panels, mirroring the OG Pegasus.

Continuing the stacked theme of the Sacai x LDWaffle, the sneaker has two Swooshes on the side – a leather Swoosh straight out of the ’80s and a print-on oversized black Swoosh (as seen on the Alphafly Next%).

The Sacai x Nike Vaporwaffle will drop in two colorways, “Sport Fuchsia” and “Black and White” on November 6.
