Build complementary fits, not couple outfits, this Valentine’s Day. Here’s how

Skip cheesy, think complementary. Check out our Valentine’s Day shopping guide for tips on how to match your partner without wearing the same thing in different sizes.

In this Valentine’s Day shopping guide, we give you tips on how to select complementary outfits instead of going full-on matchy-matchy. Remember: you don’t have to wear identical outfits on Valentine’s Day for it to count as a couple fit.

1. Go with similar or complementary colors. To do this, pair colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel: red and green; yellow and purple; orange and blue; green and magenta. Doesn’t sound like it works, but somehow doing this results in striking combos that are satisfyingly cohesive. They’re also bang on the retro-inspired trends of color blocking.

2. Create variations on a theme. Say you both decide to go with checks, then one of you can go with a checked top and the other can go with checks on a pocket or bag. Or, go with a color in various shades.

3. Accent your outfit with matching accessories. You both get a free pass with wearing the same socks or bags. Why? These are items that are small enough to indicate that some effort has been made to be cohesive without going over the top.

With these tips in mind, browse our Valentine’s Day shopping guide and get your complementary outfits sorted in time for February 14. Don’t wait!
