Adidas brings back an iconic sneaker from the 70s – the SL 72. It will be released alongside the updated SL 72 RS, which features a chunkier outsole and more colorway options.

History of SL 72

1972 was an exciting year for Adidas, unveiling the SL 72 which would feature the iconic Trefoil logo for the first time. The then-brand new sneaker was dubbed the ‘superlight’ thanks to a combination of materials that were used in the construction of the shoes. This focus on lightness was driven by the needs of world-class track athletes who were seeking speed and agility.

The Adidas SL 72 boasts a nylon upper construction rendering it remarkably lightweight. The shoes were made more durable with reinforced suede overlays at the toe, heel, and eyelets. The streamlined EVA midsole is accompanied by a rubber toe protector to prevent abrasions. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s classic designs, the shoe features a serrated rubber outsole, ensuring stable traction on any surface. Everything is packaged in a sleek profile complemented by a slender toe design.

SL 72 in 2024

In 2024, Adidas is bringing back the classic silhouette, not for the tracks like it used to be, but rather for the contemporary world of street fashion. Two different variations of the SL 72 is set to release – the original SL 72 from 1972 and the SL 72 RS. The difference lies with the RS model which features an updated chunkier outsole. It is set to release in two colorways, yellow and green, while the SL 72 returns in a brown colorway.
