Pink is a color that evokes femininity and warmth, usually associated with roses and cherry blossoms. And now, thanks to Greta Gerwig’s box office hit film Barbie, pink is having its moment in fashion and streetwear.
Barbie pink has taken over the fashion runways and has made striking appearances on most red carpets — everywhere from the Valentino Fall/Winter 2022 fashion show to the ‘Karl Lagerfield’ themed Met Gala in May this year.
But the rise of 2000s nostalgia and fashion could be a reason for the resurgence of the power of pink.
In the early 2000s, pop culture icons like socialite Paris Hilton embraced pink unabashedly. In the early 2010s, rapper Nicki Minaj expressed her love for pink and Barbie, even coining the term “Barbz” for her fans. The color pink has always been synonymous with her image, as seen in her Super Bass era and even in her collaboration on the Barbie World soundtrack for the Barbie movie with rapper Ice Spice this year.
The catchphrase “on Wednesdays we wear pink” was popularized by the movie Mean Girls (2004) and in Legally Blonde (2001), the character Elle Woods defied law school norms by dressing in pink.
Even streetwear hasn’t been able to resist pink. We’ve seen palettes shift from being heavily all-black to pink, whether it’s a powder pink hoodie or hot pink sneakers or accessories, pink has had its moment in streetwear. Here are celebrities who have been spotted in pink:
