Esports: from hobby to mainstream event.
A partnership between the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and Alisports, the sports arm of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, was announced to introduce competitive gaming as a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Additionally, esports will also get a demonstration in this year’s Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG), as well as the 2018 Asian Games, which will be held in Indonesia.
According to the OCA, contested games include “FIFA 2017, MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) and RTA (Real Time Attack) gaming types” .
“We look forward to further collaboration with Alisports in regards to digital sports concepts along with sporting events,” said HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, President of OCA. “We are sure that the extensive organizing capabilities of Alisports, and their experience in e-sports, will assist the OCA in developing all sports.”
