McGregor’s Manager: Conor May Not Wear Reebok for Mayweather Fight

Conor McGregor in Nike for a change?

Audie Attar, the manager of Conor McGregor, has said the Irish fighter is a free agent and can sport gear from any athletic brand for his big fight against Mayweather.

“He’s currently a free agent with regard to athletic apparel,” said Attar in an interview. “We’re still in discussions with Reebok and other brands.”

As a UFC fighter, McGregor is obligated to wear Reebok in the Octagon ring and during fight week. This is due to a six-year sponsorship deal that UFC and Reebok signed in 2015.

However, since the Mayweather boxing match is technically not an MMA fight, McGregor is free to wear any athletic brand he chooses.

When asked if McGregor would wear a rival brand like Nike, Attar said that it was a possibility.

“It’s definitely a great opportunity for Conor and any brand we decide to align with,” Attar said. “If he signs with Nike, he can wear Nike for this fight. That’s accurate.”

On that note, the asking price for title sponsorship of the Mayweather vs McGregor fight has been revealed by ESPN.

The price is US$10 million, which will entitle the sponsor to logo placements and branding in the center of the ring, on the ring girls, two of the ropes, and in two non-fighter corners. It will also receive mention in the first minute of every round and get US$500,000 in tickets.

Other than the primary sponsorship package, companies can also opt to sponsor the corners of Mayweather and McGregor. The asking price for that is US$5 million.

If all deals are met, the potential US$20 million revenue would be the largest sponsorship package for a combat sport.

The current record stands at US$13.2 million from five companies that sponsored the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight in 2015.

The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Conor McGregor fight takes place on August 26, 2017.
