According to Fifa.com, Telstar is a Russian word that translates to “dreams” or “ambition”. The term pays homage to Russia, the nation hosting the 2018 World Cup.
The technologically advanced soccer ball features a unique near-field communication (NFC) chip that allows consumers to unlock exclusive content related to the World Cup through an app on their smartphones. Users will also be able to test and improve their skills with the soccer ball which sets challenges for the consumer to complete, reports Dezeen.
In terms of its design, the Adidas Telstar Mechta will feature a vivid red and white colorway, inspired by Russia. Additionally, the ball will also sport a graphic similar to the Telstar 18 (image below). Other design details include both Adidas and Fifa branding.
More excitingly, Adidas Football states that the Telstar Mechta will be used in the knockout stages of World Cup 2018. Which makes the high tech ball the first NFC chip embedded soccer ball used in an official match.
