Lately, New Balance has been peaking with its popular New Balance 2002R silhouette that has been dominating the ‘Dad Shoe’ category. It has an unpretentious, minimalist vibe that embeds itself seamlessly into the styles of today’s customers.

New Balance first debuted the 2002 series in 2010, which elevated the quality of runners of that time. The 2002 series however carried a hefty price tag, going for US$230 a pair, which quickly dissuaded consumers and was eventually discontinued.

Recently, it has seen a revival thanks to the ‘Dad Shoe’ movement in the late 2010s. Today, the 2002R is back with an affordable price point of US$130 under NB’s lifestyle category with an R suffix. Collaborations with Salehe Bembury and thisisneverthat and more, culminating in its popularity skyrocketing at the launch of the ‘Protection Pack’ series last year.

How does the New Balance 2002R feel on-feet?

The 2002R’s uppers are made with leather of decent quality and suede materials with the typical 3M reflective strips. Though its composition may vary, the quality of materials is generally a tier below New Balance’s ‘Made in’ lines but a tier above many offerings from other sneakers at similar price points (US$130).

The New Balance 2002Rs aligns with the ‘Form Follows Function’ ideology having an ergonomic construction that allows for good breathability and all-day comfort. It is outfitted with the ABZORB midsole, ABZORB SBS heel cushioning and N-ergy outsole, giving you a nice underfoot feeling and reliable arch support.

What size New Balance 2002R to buy?

In terms of sizing, the New Balance 2002R fits closely to the 990v5. That means when it’s compared to other sneaker brands, it’s best to go a half-size down. For those with wider feet, we would recommend going true to size. The sizing is matched to the 990 series, so if you’re comfortable with the 990s in US9, grab a 2002R in a US9 as well.

How to style the New Balance 2002Rs?

Depending on the colorway of your 2002R, you would most likely find yourself with a versatile construction with neutral tones. So pair it with some wide-fitting bottoms or dressed-down shorts and don’t be afraid to accessorize to give your outfit that extra pop of color. Here are some outfits to keep in mind.

How to maintain the New Balance 2002R?

The 2002Rs are not the easiest silhouette to maintain, especially with the heavy use of suede all across the uppers. The luxe material cannot be cleaned like leathers or mesh, requiring the use of dry methods, like erasers and delicate suede brushes, to remove dirt without damaging the fibres. Get a suede cleaning kit from Jason Markk or Reshoevn8r to get everything you need to keep your suede kicks spotless.
