Origins
Salomon has come a long way since their founder, Francois Salomon, established the brand in 1947. The brand originally focused on winter sports gear, specifically saw blade and ski edge fabrication. Later, it started also offering gear for trekking, hiking, running and, most recently, casual lifestyle wear.
Transition to fashion
Salomon achieved this transition through a series of well-timed streetwear and high fashion collabs. Everything started with a runway debut in Boris Bidjan Saberi’s Spring/Summer 2017 show. From there, brands like Palace, Comme des Garçons, Beams, Dover Street Market, Hidden NY and Carhartt WIP have turned Salomon’s performance sneakers into streetwear hits that offer performance and style.
XT-6: A Cult Favorite
Maybe you’re on the cusp of owning your first Salomon. Perhaps you’ve come around to the beauty of Salomon footwear. Either way, one of the best Salomon models to cop is the XT-6. Its sleek, low-profile silhouette has fully transcended its outdoor roots and is now an established staple in street culture. It’s now commonplace to see icons rocking the XT-6 to fashion week runways or plastered across street fashion curation pages like Uniform Display.
Features of the XT-6
The XT-6 is built for rough, uneven terrain and it shows when you review its tech specifications. The sneaker features ‘EndoFit’, which allows the mesh upper to hug the feet, while the combination of Agile Chassis System (ACS) and AC Muscle 2 in the midsole provides stability and support necessary for treacherous terrains. The star of the show is the Mud Contagrip with lugs deep enough to provide substantial tractions in both dry and wet conditions. It is also equipped with Salomon’s famous quick-lacing system, with easy tightening and adjusting through the loop structure that locks the foot in without any heel slippage.
Sizing the XT-6
For the normal XT-6, we recommend going true-to-size for a perfect fit if you have normal or high arches. For wider feet, we would recommend going up half a size. If you are a size US9 in a Nike Dunk or Adidas Samba, consider purchasing a US9.5 pair.
For the XT-6 Gore-Tex, we recommend going half-size up due to the thicker Gore-Tex upper regardless of foot width. If you would normally wear a US9 in any other sneaker, you should consider purchasing US9.5.
Styling the XT-6
The Salomon XT-6 falls in line with the current obsession with workwear-inspired outfits. The functional design and rugged appearance of Salomon shoes pair perfectly with baggy or straight-cut pants. Scroll down for ideas on how to style the Salomon XT-6 with streetwear.
