What Would Diplo Do? will revolve around the fictional life of the Grammy-winning musician, Diplo.
Modeled after comedies like Louie and This is Spinal Tap, Deadline reports that What Would Diplo Do? will feature Diplo as “the guy who can bring 60,000 people to their feet…but kind of sucks one-on-one”.
The series will star James Van Der Beek and will be “shepherded” by Oscar-nominated director, Spike Jonze. Additionally, Diplo himself will be an executive producer for the new show.
Diplo’s on-screen character will be based on Van Der Beek’s portrayal of Diplo in Mad Decent Block Party. In it, the actor plays a clueless Diplo surrounded by air horns, parties, and cash.
“I’ve enjoyed deconstructing my own image quite a bit over the years, but to have the chance to do it with a global megastar like Diplo who’s letting us to do something fun and ridiculous that few people have the balls to allow is crazy,” Van Der Beek told Esquire. “To get to work with this creative team within a Viceland aesthetic is fun on a whole new level.”
Currently, six episodes have been confirmed. What Would Diplo Do? is set to premiere later this year.
