ASICS Tiger SS17: A Guide to the Season’s Best Models

Let our handy guide help you navigate your way around the ASICS Tiger SS17 drops. Take note: there are plenty to choose from.

1. GEL-LYTE III

GEL-LYTE-III

The ASICS Tiger GEL-LYTE III is one of the best-selling models of the ASICS Tiger range for two simple reasons: its style and performance. Launched in the 1980s, the sneakers also feature GEL cushioning and a unique split tongue for added comfort.

Some of the most notable collaborations that have been made with the iconic model are the Limited EDT x ASICS “Vanda” celebrating Singapore’s Golden Jubilee and the timeless Ronnie Fieg x ASICS “Salmon Toe”. The Ronnie Fieg x GEL-LYTE III “Super Green” also made it to Straatosphere‘s list as one of the best kicks of 2016.

2. GEL-LYTE V

Another iconic silhouette, the ASICS Tiger GEL-LYTE V is a street style favorite. Popular amongst sneakerheads, the model features a sock-like fit flexible enough to adapt to the contours of the feet as the wearer moves.

The ASICS Tiger GEL-LYTE V has been used in collabs such as the much hyped Commonwealth x ASICS Tiger GEL-LYTE V “Da Vinci” and the iconic Bape x ASICS Tiger GEL-LYTE V.

3. GT-II

The legendary GT-II made its entry into the market back in 1986. Modeled after the notable ‘X-Caliber GT’, a shoe model that was created for high performance running and training. The GEL cushioning and its clean, sleek design makes the GT-II one of the popular choices amongst ASICS Tiger shoes today.

A collaboration that demonstrates the beauty of the GT-II? We can’t pick one. But the mita sneakers x ASICS “Squirrel” and Ronnie Fieg x ASICS “High Risk” are among our favorites.

4. GEL-SAGA

Launched in the early 90s, the GEL-SAGA was created for casual joggers. The model features a molded midsole and an insole for added comfort. According to the brand, the GEL-SAGA was so popular in the 90s that a million pairs were sold worldwide.

The most noteworthy GEL-SAGA collab was the one made with Ronnie Fieg and Diamond Supply Co. featuring a beautiful pigskin suede in the striking “Tiffany Blue” colorway.

5. GEL-RESPECTOR

The GEL-RESPECTOR, a retro runner that made its re-entry into ASICS Tiger’s range last year, is perhaps aptly named due to the respect and recognition many sneaker fans have for the model.

The shoe features GEL technology within a molded EVA midsole. In fact, the GEL-RESPECTOR shares a similar midsole to the GEL-LYTE III, with parts of the cushioning foam raised around the lateral and medial portions of the mid-foot, providing stability and an improved fit.

The large heel on the GEL-RESPECTOR is an indication that the shoe is made for those who spend most of the day on their feet, whether for walking, hiking, or maybe even shopping and partying.

6. GEL-SIGHT

GEL-SIGHT

First introduced to the Japanese market back in ’92, the GEL-SIGHT has since been revamped to include a larger heel stabilizer (GEL-WAVE suspension) and a visible GEL window on the sneaker’s outer.

An unforgettable GEL-SIGHT release was the ASICS Tiger GEL-SIGHT “Bulls Of Pamplona”. The striking red and black colorway makes us see red that we don’t own a pair.

7. GEL-KAYANO TRAINER

The GEL-KAYANO TRAINER, known as the flagship model designed for high performance running, features properties to help boost mobility including a molded upper side panel, mono-tongue fit system, and a rear foot protector.

Other features include an αGEL in the heel and P-GEL in the front – both work to buffer shock delivered to the feet from constantly being on the go.

TheGEL-KAYANO TRAINER was part of a highly sought after Bape x ASICS Tiger collaboration in 2015. Another collab worth taking note of: the Packer Shoes x ASICS Tiger “Triple Red”, an all-red shoe that was equal parts luxurious and eye-catching.

8. GEL-MAI

First launched in the 90s, the GEL-MAI made its re-emergence from the ASICS archives last year. For the re-introduction, ASICS Tiger partnered Ronnie Fieg to create the “Militia Initiatve”. Needless to say, those were well-received.

The winning combination of a unique asymmetrical lacing system that ensures the shoes stay tightened on both the forefoot and the ankle with fuzeGEL cushioning, a lightweight midsole, makes the GEL-MAI a standout shoe.

Ronnie Fieg has even gone so far as to declare the GEL-MAI the best sneaker in the ASICS archive. Words to think about, coming from the man who has dealt a great deal with ASICS Tiger shoes.

9. GEL-DS TRAINER OG

The GEL-DS TRAINER OG is a reboot of the popular, high mileage GEL-DS TRAINER launched in 1995. The shoe features a mono-sock structure for a snug fit, as well as a Duo Sole for that extra bit of grip.

The revamped kicks are available in White/Black or the OG Black/Dark Gray colorway with pink accents, complete with a chunky-looking outer – perfect for the 90s throwback that is the fashion scene these days.

10. GEL-LYTE KOMACHI

The GEL-LYTE KOMACHI launched in 2017, is the first ASICS Tiger model designed exclusively for women. Consequently, the shoe sports a sleeker and cleaner silhouette.

The GEL-LYTE KOMACHI is a great addition to any girl’s footwear collection, whether they’re just starting to shop sneakers or have been buying the smallest ASICS Tiger sizes just to fit in.

11. GEL-LYTE III NS

GEL-LYTE-III

A descendant of the iconic GEL-LYTE III, the GEL-LYTE III NS, launched in the 90s, packs the same design features as its predecessor.

The difference? The GEL-LYTE III NS features a no-sew construction, a seamless upper and a signature split tongue. The GEL-LYTE III NS packs all the comfort into a solid, and streamlined pair of kicks.

12. GEL-LIQUE

gel-lique

GEL-LIQUE gets its name from the Latin word for “melted” (“lique”), presumably because the kicks are so comfortable, the ground will feel like water. According to the brand, GEL-LIQUE was named one of the most comfortable sneakers of the 1990s.

Appearance-wise, the shoe has been given the retro touch with alternating mesh and suede panels. Very much in keeping the comeback of the trends from the 90s.

There have been no GEL-LIQUE collaborations just yet, though the 2016 release of the “Indian Ink” colorway generated quite a bit of buzz.

13. GEL-KAYANO TRAINER EVO

ASICS Tiger goes minimalist with the GEL-KAYANO TRAINER EVO. But there’s nothing minimal under the hood of the GEL-KAYANO TRAINER EVO. With the same mono-sock construction as the GEL-KAYANO, mesh uppers, and a sleek design, the GEL-KAYANO TRAINER EVO is the brand’s modern take on a classic.

14. CURREO

ASICS CURREO

The CURREO is a winning combination of style and sophistication. Inspired by the X-CALIBER, the kicks feature a mesh upper and a synthetic leather overlay.

Additionally, the sable sole also provides the wearer added comfort. Simply put, the CURREO is a sleek reminder of the brand’s running heritage.
