The Golden Globes is a yearly affair that celebrates the best in cinema and television. On January 6, 2019, the world’s biggest actors, actresses and directors gathered for the 76th edition of the awards to find out who gets the glory and the Globes.
Because the Golden Globes take place at 9am Singapore time, and we all have jobs to be at, here are all the highlights from the awards show. Note: There will be spoilers, so you have been warned.
1. Rami Malek Wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
The Queen biopic had some of the best reviews this year, and deservingly so. Over 10 years in the making, the film was headed by Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor who made sure every detail was accurate to a T. All this paved the way for Rami Malek to embody Freddie Mercury, earning him a gong for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture. Malek rightfully dedicated the award to Queen and of course, Freddie Mercury.

2. A Star Is Born was shut out at the Awards, winning just 1 Golden Globe
A Star Is Born, seemed to have won the hearts of critics and movie-goers with its heart-warming story and breakout performance by Lady Gaga. However, in a year full of upsets, the musical drama did not win a single award in the acting department. They did win Best Original Song for “Shallow” in an otherwise disappointing night for the ensemble.

3. Sandra Oh definitely won the night, for herself at least
Sandra Oh had quite an evening. Not only was she bestowed the honor of hosting the Golden Globes 2019, but the “Killing Eve” actress was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama, and won. She makes history as the first Asian woman to win in her category. Sandra thanked her parents for being able to make it to the award show in her acceptance speech and their reactions may be the cutest thing you will see this week.

4. Christian Bale thanks the devil for inspiration
Christian Bale bagged the Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) award for his role as ex-Vice President of the USA, Dick Cheney, in Vice, and gave us an acceptance speech to remember. First of all, Bale is Welsh – a fact we often forget. Secondly, he thanked Satan for inspiring his performance of Cheney – an epic burn to “Satan” himself.

5. It’s 2019, but Wakanda is forever
Black Panther was a monumental film of 2018. It was the first time a Black superhero had his own film in all the 10-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film became a symbol of power for all Black people and was a fan favorite of the year. While Black Panther walked away with no awards at the Golden Globes 2019, its cast definitely showed up in style.

6. Lady Gaga pays tribute to an earlier A Star Is Born actress with her dress
A Star Is Born has been redone about five times now, in various formats from musicals to movies. The latest remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga may have lost out in terms of awards at the Globes, but everyone can agree that Lady Gaga’s Valentino haute couture gown was a winner. Some people allege Gaga was channeling her inner Judy Garland, the A Star Is Born lead from the 1954 version of the film.

7. A new star is born: meet Fiji Water Girl
The unlikeliest celebrity of the Golden Globes 2019 is Fiji Water Girl (as she is now known), who made it big on the internet for her perfect photobombs. Fiji Water Girl seemed to always be in the right place at the right time, showing up in red carpet photos behind the likes of Jim Carrey, Dakota Fanning and other celebs. Talk about awesome product placement.
