Watch: XXXTentacion’s posthumous music video, “SAD!”

XXXTentacion was credited as the writer and co-director of “SAD!”.

“SAD!” was released on Thursday, June 28, just 10 days after the rapper’s untimely death.

Directed by James Pereira “JMP”, the music video features XXXTentacion attempting to destroy his old self with a fist fight. Throughout the music video, the rapper is seen engaging in a philosophical discussion with a hooded figure known as the “gekyume”. For the uninitiated, the term “gekyume” means “a different state” and was reportedly coined by the rapper himself.

Some speculate that “SAD!” alludes to the rapper’s attempt to turn over a new leaf. XXXTentacion was involved in a slew of legal troubles before his death. The rapper also received charges for the assault and battery of his pregnant girlfriend earlier in 2016. A compelling message that supports this theory is the handwritten note that appears onscreen, 5 minutes and 20 seconds into the music video. It reads:

“Oh! And I want her love all to myself. Loyalty. People change, things change, and so did I. As long as the outcome is good for myself and family. I’m not complaining.”

To date, “SAD!” has received an astounding 21 million views on YouTube since its release on Thursday, June 28. In addition, Twitter user @chartdata claims that the single has also broken the record for the most streams in a day, receiving 10.4 million streams during its premiere on June 19. The record was previously held by Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”.
